Julia Morgan Legacy Tour

Julia Morgan and William Randolph HearstSun March 1, 11am-2pm 

Noted architect Julia Morgan contributed a cohesive grace to the original Beach House estate built in the late 1920s, shaping the site’s legacy along with William Randolph Hearst and Marion Davies. 

11am – 12pm Julia Morgan: A Closer Look, a presentation by Victoria Kastner
12pm-2pm Visit the Marion Davies Guest House and view the historic pool to see Morgan’s work first hand. Santa Monica Conservancy docents will be sharing facets of Morgan’s career.

Ms. Kastner, a historian at Hearst Castle, is the author of the definitive trilogy on Hearst Castle, published by Abrams books: Hearst Ranch: Family, Land, and Legacy; Hearst Castle: The Biography of a Country House; and Hearst’s San Simeon: The Gardens and the Land. She has lectured extensively, including at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, LACMA, and the Getty. She has also been interviewed on the Today Show, CBS This Morning, NPR, and Australian National Radio.

Teams of two construct yachts from corrugated cardboard and duct tape and vie for awards in a variety of categories.  Registration is $15 per team.  Anyone can watch and cheer on the yachts!  Look for the next Regatta in August 2015.  


Pack a dinner and grab your friends and family for a fun evening at the Beach House.  Games for all ages, or sit back and relax.  This event is free, reservations are requested.  The Community Picnic takes place every July.

Connect with your inner naturalist and join us for Beach Walks with the Santa Monica & Los Angeles Audubon Societies, a Beach House winter tradition.  Beach Walks are free, reservations are required.  Comfortable clothing and sun protection are recommended.

Love the beach? Have an eye for detail? Bring your sense of adventure and take to the sands to walk and sketch the natural wonders of Santa Monica State Beach.  Binoculars, drawing boards and newsprint will be provided, or bring your own easy to carry sketching tools. 

Snowy Plover Beach Ecology Walk
Looking for a new holiday tradition? Explore the habitat and life cycles of the federally threatened snowy plover, a small white bird that makes Santa Monica and surrounding beach cities its home this time of year. Binoculars will be provided, or bring your own!  

Audubon Family Field Trip

Family Field Trip Beach Walk
Sign your permission slip for fun! We'll head to the beach to explore slimy seaweed, sand crabs, beach hoppers, gulls, snowy plovers and grebes! Recommended for ages 5 and up, with parent or guardian in attendance. Binoculars and field guides will be available for extra fun. 


You're invited to a winter tradition at the Beach House! Happy Birthday Marion! pays tribute to the original Beach House resident, Marion Davies; actress, philanthropist, famed party host, and mistress of media tycoon WIlliam Randolph Hearst. Join the Santa Monica Conservancy and celebrate with vintage panache at Davies' 1928 Julia Morgan designed Guest House.
Event schedule will include a screening of the 1928 film Show People, music from the 20s & 30s by Janet Klein, and a birthday toast!  Check back in December for more information and reservations.
